APPLICATION NOTE - BACKING UP DAS8/DGR33A DISK FILES TO TAPE

SUMMARY

For users wishing to back up a file to tape and then continue collecting data without shutting down the system, RMS suggests one of the following methods. These notes are applicable to Software Versions RMS1551-01-H and later.

METHOD A

  1. Start up with disk and tape.
  2. Optionally open a different disk file.
  3. Back up to tape.
  4. Remove or change tapes.
  5. Compile. This will automatically open the file.
  6. Start scanning.

METHOD B

  1. Start up with disk and tape.
  2. Compile. This writes on the tape, so do next step.
  3. Rewind tape.
  4. Put tape off line (Tape Functions, D 9).
  5. Scan for as long as necessary.
  6. Put tape on line (Tape Functions D 0).
  7. Back up file to tape.
  8. Put tape off line or remove tape.
  9. Open a file and start scanning.

NOTE: You must start up with a tape in the drive to be able to write to the tape at any time during operation. The DAS8/DGR33A distinguishes between "tape off", which is a temporary condition, and "no tape", which is permanent.
